  TYPES OF LASERS

BEST Inc has a variety of LASER sources, which can drill , cut, mil and etch materials with dimensional tolerances as small as 1 micron (0.00004").depending on the job, to choose from. The onsite CO2 LASER has very good processing speeds and can be used to cut, scribe, scive and etch nearly any organic material such as glass, ceramic, wood and plastics. The YAG source onsite LASER has the ability to work on nearly any material including metals, plastics, silicon and ceramics.

BEST Inc laser skiving capability, the ability to cut off thin layers of material, is an extension of our laser ablation process, which does not burn or melt material, but instead removes material by breaking its molecular bonds, leaving the underlying material layers intact. BEST Inc laser skiving process is essentially a controlled-depth laser ablation process applied to tubing and other cylindrical objects.

CO2 lasers cut, drill and mark materials by vaporizing the material through a process of known as photothermal ablation. The efficiency of the photothermal ablation process is highly dependent upon the absorption of the material. Materials, because of their inherent physical and chemical properties, absorb light differently at different wavelengths. Less absorptive materials require longer dwell times that can cause substantial thermal damage or smaller thermal "wrinkles" in the surrounding material while leaving a lot of debris. Several materials have even better absorption at shorter wavelengths in the range of 9.2um which is the operating frequency of the BEST CO2 LASER. In fact, some material's absorption is so much better at these shorter wavelengths that material processing in this part of the spectrum significantly speeds up processing time while decreasing thermal and collateral damage.

A common type of material used extensively in the electronics industry is polyimide. Polyimide is a synthetic polymer resin typically coated on copper substrates that is resistant to high temperature, wear and corrosion. It is used extensively in the electronics for flex circuits and printed wire boards.

BEST Inc has laser technology which can selectively both drill and cut polyimide, and others which can drill or cut the copper. Our YAG laser offers several benefits for plastics marking, including the ability to produce a photo-chemical color change, unaccompanied by any material damage or toxic fumes, without the need for solvents or material additives. In addition this type of laser can etch and cut metals. Furthermore, the beam of this laser can be focused to small spot size, enabling a marking resolution as high as 2,500 dpi. In addition, because this cold marking occurs at laser intensities well below those that would damage the plastic, there is a wide process window that is tolerant of variations in material or ambient conditions.

After reviewing the supplied prints and instructions, BEST Inc laser technicians develop the process using customer-supplied samples for approval. Upon approval BEST Inc can machine, inspect and provide other valued-added services to the client including but not limited to packaging, light assembly and mechanical and electrical testing services. Our award-winning customer service staff is with you the whole time making sure you are well-informed and expectations meet reality.
